Nigeria Suffers Second Largest HIV Epidemic Worlwide

Abuja, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS affirms that Nigeria has the second largest HIV epidemic in the world, consular sources revealed.

The acting Public Affairs Officer of the United States Consulate in this country, Kevin Krapf, referred to the issue during the commemoration of World AIDS Day in the Nigerian city of Lagos.

Krapf added that Nigeria has one of the highest infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa, but expressed confidence in the official capacity to reverse the situation.

We have a historic opportunity to accelerate progress towards control and end the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a threat to public health in countries around the world, he said.

He emphasized the critical role of transparency, accountability, and alliances to achieve these objectives.

In this regard, he recalled that many people living with HIV in Nigeria are unaware of their status due to the insufficient number of HIV counseling and testing centers.

For that reason, the official was pleased that the Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to using the national funds to provide antiretroviral medicines each year to 50,000 people more living with HIV.

We are at an unprecedented moment in the global response to HIV/AIDS. For the first time in modern history we have the opportunity to change the course of a pandemic by controlling it without a vaccine or a cure, he said.
